Tier 1: primary authorities
Use regulators, government agencies, official statistical bodies, and original filings when they directly answer the question.
Examples include the Federal Reserve, CFPB, IRS, SEC, BLS, BEA, Census Bureau, and state agencies.
Tier 2: original institutional research
Use universities, standards bodies, and recognized trade organizations when primary public data is incomplete.
Record publication dates, methodologies, sample sizes, and material limitations.
Tier 3: reputable reporting
Use established journalism for timely context, never as a substitute for the underlying filing, dataset, or official announcement when one is available.
Operational rule
Every quantitative claim should be traceable to a named source, date, and methodology note. Calculators must disclose assumptions and avoid presenting educational estimates as personalized advice.
